How can I prepare for the consultation with my Network Attorney?

Plan Members are entitled to one fully covered consultation with a Network Attorney per legal matter. Any additional consultations may be billed to the Member by the attorney at the

discounted rate. In instances where Member is not satisfied with an attorney’s advice, they may be eligible for one additional second opinion consultation with an alternate attorney.

  • Follow the instructions provided by your Member Care Representative in your Attorney Assignment email.

  • Gather all relevant documents regarding your legal matter and make copies to provide to the attorney. Applicable documentation may include court related documents, insurance policies, traffic citations, accident reports, medical records, text messages, correspondence, emails, photographs, financial records, deeds, contracts, warranties or previous documents related to estate planning.

  • Create a timeline of important dates and events. Be prepared to provide contact information for witnesses, family members or other parties that may be involved with your legal matter.

  • Write down any questions you have so you do not forget them. This will avoid unnecessary calls or emails after the consultation. Bring a notepad to take notes during the consultation.

  • Be prepared to answer questions. It is important that you are honest with your attorney. Attorneys are bound by the attorney-client relationship so any information you share will be kept confidential.

  • Let the attorney know what it is you expect to achieve and identify your goals.

  • Be prepared to discuss an Attorney Fee Retainer Agreement and/or a Cost/Expenses Retainer Agreement. This is a customary and binding document utilized to define the Attorney/Client relationship and expectations for your individual legal matter, and in most instances is required before an attorney can provide legal services. Review the Agreement carefully to ensure that it contains the details of your U.S. Legal Services covered services and if it is refundable or non-refundable. If you have questions, speak with the attorney and/or a Member Care Representative before signing.

  • Understand that all of your attorney’s time is billable time and your U.S. Legal Services plan covers Network Attorney’s fees only based on your coverage. All out of pocket expenses such as travel, court filing fees, service of process fees, fines, penalties, court-ordered payments of Attorney Fees, court costs, clerical, postage, and any other costs and expenses are your responsibility.

  • To avoid interruptions, turn off your cell phone or other electronic devices.
